Meaning of Microbiome

The microbiome refers to the community of microscopic organisms that live within and on the body, especially in the digestive tract. In dogs and cats, this ecosystem is made up of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that work together to help break down food and support internal balance. 

Rather than being separate from the body, the microbiome functions more like an extension of it—constantly interacting with digestion, immune response, and nutrient absorption. A stable microbiome helps the body process food more efficiently and maintain consistency in digestion. 

When this balance is supported, pets tend to show more predictable stool quality and overall digestive comfort. Diet, environment, and routine all influence how this microbial community develops and maintains itself over time.
