Novel Protein | Glossary

A novel protein is a protein source that a pet has not been regularly exposed to before. Examples may include rabbit, venison, duck, or goat, depending on the dog’s dietary history.

Novel proteins are often used when pet owners want to simplify the diet or rotate away from more common ingredients. Because the body has limited previous exposure, these proteins can provide additional variety within rotational feeding approaches.

In raw feeding, novel proteins are also valued for expanding nutrient diversity through different amino acid and fat profiles. Variety helps create broader nutritional exposure over time rather than relying on one repetitive ingredient source.
