Scratching is one of the most natural behaviors cats display. Far beyond sharpening their claws, scratching helps cats stretch their muscles, remove the outer layer of the nail, leave scent markings, and communicate visually with other animals.
Indoor cats continue to exhibit this instinct even when they have no need to defend their territory. Providing appropriate scratching posts and surfaces allows cats to satisfy this behavior without damaging furniture, and understanding why cats scratch makes it easier to redirect the behavior instead of trying to eliminate it.
