What is Crude Protein?

Crude protein is a measurement used on pet food labels to estimate the total protein content within a food. The calculation measures nitrogen levels rather than directly analyzing every individual amino acid present.

Because of this, crude protein reflects quantity more than overall protein quality or digestibility. Two foods may display similar protein percentages while providing very different nutritional value, depending on ingredient sourcing and bioavailability.

In raw feeding, protein quality is often considered just as important as crude protein numbers themselves. Whole animal ingredients naturally provide amino acids in forms the body can recognize and use efficiently.
